CAEN RFID Easy2Read products integrate Intel network processors

Assago (Milan), Viareggio (Lucca), November, 22nd 2006

Intel Corporation and CAEN RFID, leading provider of electronic instrumentation for radio frequency identification, announce a collaboration to boost the adoption of RFID technology. CAEN RFID has chosen to integrate Intel® network processor Intel®IXP455 in its range of RFID Easy2Read products.

The advent and rapid uptake of RFID by some industrial sectors is just a first step in the spread of this technology, which has extensive potential for use and tangible effects on business. You just need to think of the significant improvements RFID has brought to goods identification methods and their storage and transport. Intel and CAEN RFID were immediately aware of the importance this technology could have in the near future, and have invested heavily to ensure the rapid uptake of RFID and to achieve the most of its advantages.

CAEN RFID will use Intel®IXP455 network processors, which have high data processing capacity, in its long range UHF readers in the Easy2Read range. The Intel® IXP455 network processors offer a highperformance architecture, extended connectivity options, and system reliability and safety. The IXP455 meets high performance standards: reduced energy consumption, a high level of flexibility, integrated Ethernet and USB support, real-time synchronisation and other networking functions, as well as shorter market introduction times than for customised components.

CAEN RFID readers meet European ETSI standards (ETSI EN 300 220 and ETSI EN 302 208) and EPC Global standards (EPC Class 1 Gen 2). With a reading capacity of up to 8 metres, these readers are the ideal solution for identifying goods on loading docks, for installation on gates for container and pallet tracking, and for warehouse management.

“We are very proud of this collaboration with INTEL, which will make our products even more performing”, declared CAEN RFID Marketing Director Giovanni Grieco. “The features of the Intel processor will enable us to install more functions on our readers, such as the option of running specific reader control programmes (Edgeware) or using adaptive strategies in reader behaviour, in order to optimise data acquisition times in tracking operations.”

“CAEN RFID has become a market leader thanks to its passion for research and ability to manufacture electronic components tailored to the needs of some of the most important research centres in the world”, declared Intel Italia CEO Dario Bucci. “We are particularly proud to be able to contribute to these results with our technology, which has become a point of reference in embedded applications.”

Information about CAEN RFID
CAEN RFID is a privately owned company, a leader in the design and manufacture of RFID readers and tags using UHF. The company is a recent spin-off from CAEN S.p.A. (Electronic Nuclear Equipment Construction), which has 27 years of experience in electronics for nuclear and particle physics experiments. This experience has enabled CAEN to take on the challenge of new industries such as Aerospace, Microelectronics and the emerging RFID technology. CAEN RFID was the first company in Europe to manufacture and supply UHF (Ultra High Frequency) long range readers. CAEN RFID’s active participation in EPC Global and ETSI workgroups enables the company to supply state-of-the-art RFID readers and tags for existing technology.
