# CAEN RFID’s Stefano Coluccini Discusses Two Decades of RFID Innovation at GS1 Italy’s “Partner in Code”

15th October 2025

**CAEN RFID** General Manager, **Stefano Coluccini**, participated in [Partner in Code – Complici di Innovazione](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3EThPF3sbJoEXX7QTjHqT0lUGORjUr7W)
, a talk series organized by **GS1 Italy** focused on real-world applications of RFID technology and GS1 standards.

The session, moderated by **Linda Vezzani**, Standard Manager at*GS1 Italy*, featured a panel of industry experts including **Stefano Parisini** from *Bancolini Symbol S.r.l*, **Gabriele Barbesta** from*Sinfotech.it S.r.l*, and **Stefano Coluccini** representing *CAEN RFID*.

Stefano Coluccini **(CAEN RFID)**, Gabriele Barbesta**(Sinfotech.it)**, Stefano Parisini **(Bancolini Symbol)**, and Linda Vezzani **(GS1 Italy)**

The discussion was titled ***The Evolution of RFID Over the Past 20 Years: Invisible but Strategic Changes***, and provided a multifaceted view of how RFID has evolved from niche pilot projects into a core technology for Italian businesses and industries.

## From Frequency Liberalization to Full-Scale Adoption

Reflecting on the early development of RFID in Italy, Stefano Coluccini highlighted some of the most important steps that have defined its evolution.
The most significant turning point came in **2007**, when the **Italian government liberalized the use of UHF RFID frequencies**. This regulatory change marked the beginning of a new era of technological progress and market maturity.

There were major improvements in **tag performance**, driven by advances in**chip design** and **signal sensitivity**. Integrated circuits became smaller and more efficient.
As production scaled and technology matured, **tag costs decreased**, opening the way for broader adoption across a variety of sectors. This transformation enabled RFID to move beyond isolated pilot projects and into full-scale applications.

At the same time **RFID readers** underwent a parallel evolution, with gains in sensitivity, signal range, and processing power significantly improving system reliability and versatility.
The market expanded to include a wide range of formats, including [handheld](https://www.caenrfid.com/it/products/fido-r1307i/)
, [desktop](https://www.caenrfid.com/it/products/slate3-r1353i/)
, [embedded](https://www.caenrfid.com/it/products/r7100-lepton7/)
, and industrial-grade readers, each suited to different operational contexts.

In addition, **software platforms** grew more intelligent and capable, increasingly enhanced by AI and machine learning technologies. These systems now support *advanced analytics, predictive capabilities, and seamless integration* into enterprise resource planning (ERP), warehouse management systems (WMS), and broader IoT infrastructures.

Another critical factor in RFID’s evolution has been **standardization**, through the adoption of the **GS1 EPC code**. This global standard has enabled system interoperability, improved data accuracy, and supported scalable RFID deployments across complex supply chains.
